In the context of high dividend yield stocks, these famous quotes above from Warren Buffett got us to thinking: what if, back in 2019, you had "planted an investment seed" by buying shares of a top high dividend yield stock, tended to the tree by reinvesting dividends received, and held on to your investment through good market times and bad, for a total long-term holding period of 5 years?

In order to sniff out companies that would be considered "top" high dividend yield stocks, we combed through components of the famous "S&P 500" index, because any member of this index would certainly be widely considered to be among the "top" businesses traded on the stock market. We next screened for high dividend yield by screening for a minimum 4% current dividend yield requirement.

In the final step, we figured out the total returns for each of the high dividend yield stocks, with dividends reinvested, from 2019 to 2024, resulting in a list of the 10 top high dividend stocks of the past five years from within the S&P 500.
